Tom is a PhD student at Georgia State University's Center for Process Innovation (CEPRIN) in the Robinson College of Business. Tom has a Masters of Business Administration degree from Brigham Young University, where he was also part of the Information Systems PhD Preparation Program, and a bachelor's degree in computer science.
 
In 2004, Tom was elected as the youngest member of the Utah State Board of Education, where he served until 2008, and was the vice chair for the board's Law and Policy Committee. During his time on the board, Tom joined Utah business and government luminaries as part of the United Way Financial Stability Council. He was also a member of Utah's Public Education Job Enhancement Committee, the Utah School Boards Association, and the National Association of State Boards of Education.
 
In his professional career, Tom was most recently Director of Software Development for an online learning management company. He previously worked for a major internet retailer as a business analyst and project manager, as an internet contractor for local businesses and non-profit organizations, and as supervisor for an IT support office serving several thousand customers.
 
An accomplished internet developer, Tom has contributed to the open source Javascript library script.aculo.us.
 
Tom still spends free weekends refereeing soccer, a job he first began in 1992.
